Abstract

This article analyzes the creative economy in the Mouraria and Alfama neighborhoods of Lisbon, focusing on artisanal production linked to Portuguese identity. The study mapped 97 artisans and conducted 15 in-depth interviews, identifying three main forms of commercialization: artists’ studios, galleries, and souvenir shops. The studios, run by Portuguese people, promote immer-sive experiences, while the shops, mostly run by Asian immigrants, sell manufactured products. The research was based on authors who highlight the consumer’s active role in the symbolic econ-omy. The appreciation of authenticity and aesthetic experience is central to the dynamics of the territories studied, in line with European Union policies and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) guidelines for the development of the creative economy.
